Sailing Holidays in the Canary Islands: Atlantic Storms

March 3, 2013

This weekend is definitely a time for enjoying some time sheltered behind the spray hood and soaking up the rays. At an average of 23 degrees C, the temperatures in Lanzarote are perfect for warming the bones. Sadly this weekend the wind is about to cancel any sensible sailor’s plans for sailing as winds are forecast to reach up to 46 knots/53kph!.  Luckily Atlantic storms don’t hang around long as they seem desperate to get to Gibraltar to cause more havoc and, by Wednesday, things are looking much more normal!

Windy in Lanzarote!

Of course there are still plenty of opportunities for getting on the water for those who are experienced in high wind conditions. Windsurfers and kite surfers as well as wave surfers are flocking to the hot spots. Unfortunately the strongest winds are due at midnight, however, the following winds are much more steady and suited for a good couple of days.

For those less inclined to battle the high wind, there are plenty of other things to do. Perhaps a wine tasting is more to your fancy? The wine that comes from the Le Geria area of Lanzarote is made from the Malvasia grape, has a deep yellow colour and almond nose. The wines were favoured in the past by King Charles III, William Shakespeare and Walter Scott. Popular choices at present include the El Grifo Cava, Vega de Yuco dry white and Bermejo Tinto, the best local red, although the locals will only drink white!

Once you’ve sampled the wines, perhaps you’ll have the courage to try out a ride on a camel to explore the beautiful volcanic scenery of the island. At 12 Euros a camel, it’s certainly not an expensive ride and they’re very friendly and well behaved!

Check out some fabulous Cesar Manrique artwork at the Cueva de los Verdes and you might even find some pirates hiding out down there from the storms!
